Vintage Circa Fly Rod mid-1880s combination rod RARE & EXQUISITE COLLECTORS
This is definitely a COLLECTORS ROD! The rod could be assembled as a 5' trolling rod or as a 7.5' heavy casting rod. Notice that the two tips have different diameter ferrules. That's because one of the tips is designed to go directly in the butt end of the rod, while the other goes into the second rod section. It would have been used for striped bass, tarpon, or small tuna in all likelihood.
It is constructed of greenheart wood. The handle is wrapped with a thin rubber, flattened cord. The double line guards are to balance out the wear of the rod so that it would not become badly warped. The rod would have been used with heavy weights and baits which would warp the rod with use. As a warp would begin to develop over time, the fisherman would rethread line to go through the opposite guides (basically, alternating the bend/set in the rod, so that it didn't become too accentuated in a particular direction).
It only has a single guide on the butt because this section is less likely to bend because of the thickness and proximity to the reel seat. The CIRCA Fly Rod is a game changer in the slow-action style of dry fly fishing. Thank you for your interest.
